Art Berlin Contemporary 2012

13 September 2012 – 16 September 2012

art berlin contemporary includes 127 galleries from 19 countries. The innovative fair format was developed by Berlin galleries as a platform for international galleries to present individual works by contemporary artists from around the world.

For abc, Blain|Southern will bring together a select group of works by Michael Joo and Rachel Howard. Both figurative and abstract paintings by Howard will be presented; Totem III (2008) from her series of ‘Suicide Paintings’, and Mann im Wald (2008-9), which conjures an equally macabre atmosphere with its use of luminously layered blacks and blues.

Joo's Merchants and Manufacturers utilises the common stanchion form, which is subversively reconfigured to challenge the syntax of the gallery space. Socio-political conflict is referenced in Untitled (Santiago, 7.9.11 – v1.0), as the artist recreates the marks of protest upon police riot shields in a recent Santiago riot, which reoccurrs at the same time every year to voice on-going social discontent.
