Art Berlin Contemporary 2014

18 September 2014 – 21 September 2014

Blain|Southern will participate in abc 2014. Art Berlin Contemporary was developed by Berlin galleries as an appealing platform for international galleries to present individual works of contemporary art from around the world.

Blain|Southern will showcase an installation by artist Sislej Xhafa titled Medusa Archive (2014), a topical project that follows the recent Lampedusa boat tragedy of 2013.

Lampedusa is the largest of the Italian Pelagie Islands and is situated off the Eastern coasts of Tunisia and Libya. Since the early 2000s, Lampedusa became a prime transit point for immigrants from Africa, the Middle East and Asia wanting to enter Europe. In October 2013, a boat carrying over 500 migrants, mostly from Eritrea and Somalia, sank off the coast of Lampedusa resulting in the deaths of over 300 people.

During a residency period on the island of Lampedusa in 2014, Sislej Xhafa investigated the environments and habitats of migrants who find themselves on this ‘paradise’ island. Collecting and presenting appropriated objects and matter discarded by the inhabitants of Lampedusa, the artist considers the nature of belonging, identity, loss and memory.
