BILL VIOLA AT DOCUMENTA 14

Bill Viola’s video installation The Raft (2004) is part of ANTIDORON - the EMST Collection, at documenta 14. Commissioned by the National Museum of Contemporary Art (EMST), Athens and first shown as part of the Cultural Olympiad, the work depicts a group of men and women struck by a massive onslaught of water.

Described by the artist as ‘an image of destruction and survival’, the New York Times said of the work that it was, ‘a stark, visceral metaphor for the collective experience of natural disasters and acts of war that feels both acutely contemporary in the video and timeless.'

EMST is the main venue of documenta 14 in Athens, and in turn, documenta 14 is hosting EMST’s collection at the Fridericianum in Kassel, from 10 June to 17 September 2017. More details are available here.
