An outdoor exhibition of Sir Anthony Cragg's sculptures is on view at Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes, Côte d'Azur, France. The monumental sculptures in this exhibition form part of two larger groups of work, 'Early Forms' and 'Rational Beings', which Cragg has been developing since the 1990s. The works derive their forms from the contours of gestural drawings, which Cragg then translates into the third dimension using thick, circular or oval discs which are superimposed (often vertically), glued together and then covered with a skin. The underlying structure of these sculptures gives their skin the tension of a membrane, reflecting the basic structures of many organisms, organs, plants and animals.
On view until October 2019, this is Blain|Southern's second partnership with this iconic location. Last year, the gallery launched the contemporary arts programme at the hotel with an exhibition of sculptures by Bernar Venet.
