The Royal Academy presents a new exhibition bringing together the work of Bill Viola and Michelangelo, exploring the universal themes of human existence and experience. Situated in the Main Galleries, the exhibition features 12 video installations by Viola alongside 14 of Michelangelo’s drawings and the 'Taddei Tondo', the artist's only marble sculpture in the UK.
While the works were produced centuries apart and in radically different media, the exhibition reveals the artists’ shared preoccupations with mortality, spirituality and transcendence. Life Death Rebirth affirms each artist as the master of his medium: Viola’s pioneering use of video in contemporary art and Michelangelo’s works on paper, regarded as exemplars of Renaissance drawing.
