Michael Simpson at the Shanghai Minsheng Art Museum, Shanghai, CN was organised in association with the John Moore’s Painting Prize China 2018, held at the museum at the same time. Michael Simpson won the UK version of the biennial painting prize in 2016 for his painting Squint 19, 2015.
First held in 1957, the John Moores Painting Prize is the UK's best-known painting competition and is named after Sir John Moores (1896-1993), the sponsor of the prize. The UK competition culminates in an exhibition held at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool every two years, which forms a key strand of the Liverpool Biennial. Previous winners have included Rose Wylie, Peter Doig, David Hockney, Euan Uglow among others. In 2010 they launched the Chinese version and now the two work together to foster cultural exchange.
