Paintings of Violence (Why I am not a mere Christian)

Rachel Howard

At the centre of Rachel Howard’s solo presentation at MACRO Testaccio was an installation of ten paintings and one sculpture titled  Paintings of Violence (Why I am not a mere Christian). Created over five years from 2011 – 2016, the works continued Howard's examination of religion, mortality and violence, specifically ‘controlled violence’. Exhibited in galleries on either side of the main space were more of Howard’s paintings that explore pattern and the grid. These paintings test the idiosyncratic qualities of oil paint, unpicking the accepted rules of engagement with this most traditional of mediums.
