Now in its 249th year, the Summer Exhibition displays works in a variety of mediums and genres by emerging and established contemporary artists. It is the aim of co-ordinator Eileen Cooper RA to extend the reach of the exhibition to include more international artists from across the world.

To support this vision, Cooper and the Summer Exhibition Hanging Committee have also invited a number of artists including Abdoulaye Konaté to exhibit works. One of the most eminent West African artists of his generation, Konaté is known for his monumental figurative and abstract textile compositions, which balance political and social reflections with an exploration of formal colour composition. Two new works Métamorphose de papillon and Poupée bleue will be on view.

The Summer Exhibition 2017 is at Royal Academy of Arts in London, UK, from 13 June - 20 August 2017
