Rain of Memories is Chiharu Shiota’s new installation for Szentendrei Képtár, part of Szentendrei Múzeumi Centrum in Hungary. Exploring the notion of memory, the installation holds 15,000 keys interlaced into a complex web of red yarn. The keys have been collected by the museum from across Hungary, Serbia and Romania. The intricate three-dimensional lattice of threads forms a dense space within which two woollen boats created by the artist are also ensnared. Running concurrently with the exhibition the neighbouring Kmetty János Múzeum will be showing a number of the artist’s work on paper.

‘Keys are familiar and very valuable things that protect important people and spaces in our lives. They also inspire us to open doors to unknown worlds.’ Chiharu Shiota

Shiota’s works can also currently be seen at the Mattress Factory, Pittsburgh, US, Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westphalen, K21, in Düsseldorf, Germany, The Biennale of Sydney , Australia and at Fundació Sorigué in Lleida, Spain.

Rain of Memories opens at Szentendrei Képtár on 13 May and runs until 16 October 2016
