A new exhibition Piranesi/Shiota: Prisons of the Imagination, juxtaposes prints by Italian artist Giovanni Battista Piranesi (b. 1710) with Chiharu Shiota’s 2012 installation Stairway.

Piranesi was famous for his Carceri d’invenzione, a series of etchings of fictitious and atmospheric ‘prisons’. The web of black yarn which surrounds the rising steps in Stairway, creates angles and spaces which echo those in Piranesi’s invented architectural fantasies. The prisons exist in the artists’ imagination and snare dreams and memories.

Piranesi/Shiota: Prisons of the Imagination, opens 16 Dec at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, Israel and runs until 6 May 2017.
