Emblems of Transformation
Photo: Peter Mallet
Francesco Clemente has ten paintings in On the Paths of Enlightenment, The Myth of India in Western Culture 1808-2017, at MASI Lugano. Opening on 24 September this ambitious exhibition examines how, from the early nineteenth century, India with its traditions, religions, landscapes, cultures and arts – has increasingly enthralled the Western world.
Clemente is known for his long-standing relationship with India, having first travelled there in 1973, he has lived and worked in the country at different phases of his life. His practice has been heavily influenced by its contemplative traditions and urban visual culture. Featured in the exhibition are new and recent works, which include his Emblems of Transformation paintings. First shown at Blain|Southern London, these watercolours by Clemente include miniature elements chosen and suggested by the artist, and executed by a family of Indian miniaturist painters from a workshop from Rajasthan.
The Myth of India in Western Culture 1808-2017 is at The Museo d’arte della Svizzera italiana (MASI Lugano) from 24 September 2017 until 21 January 2018.
