Jeroen Verhoeven’s Virtue of Blue has been installed in the Corning Museum of Glass’ new Contemporary Art + Design Wing. Recently acquired by the museum, it is part of a permanent collection that features prominent contemporary glassworks.
Virtue of Blue is a chandelier that draws connections between beauty, the power of nature and the importance of sustainable energy. Five hundred butterflies, cut from blue photovoltaic cells collect solar energy during the day, which is transferred to a hand blown glass bulb to produce light at night. This self-sustaining chandelier is an artwork that playfully explores the economy of light through innovative materials.
