Marius Bercea is currently exhibiting six works in Hotspot Cluj, New Romanian Art, which opened at ARKEN Museum of Modern Art in Copenhagen on May 25th.
The exhibition draws attention to a new generation of contemporary artists in Romania - most notably in the city of Cluj – who have been producing work over the last ten years that has attracted international attention. Using a range of different media and conceptual frameworks, these artists are consistently and individually pushing the boundaries of painting, performance, sculpture, video art and drawing. Moreover, they are united in their prominent historical awareness both of the political history of Europe and of its art historical foundations.
ARKEN director Christian Gether says, "They represent the range found in Romanian art today. Thoughtfulness, irony and sensitivity to the present distinguish their art. Examining recent Romanian history, they explore their identity as Romanians and Europeans."
Alongside Marius Bercea, other artists featuring work include Răzvan Botiş, Radu Cioca, Radu Comşa, Adrian Ghenie, Dan Măciucă, Ciprian Mureşan, Cristi Pogăcean, and Şerban Savu.
The show runs until 10th November.
