Mat Collishaw and James White both feature in Nature Morte: Contemporary Artists Reinvigorate the Still Life at Guildhall Art Gallery, London. The touring exhibition makes its final stop in London, having previously shown in Norway, Sweden and Poland.
Inspired by still life paintings of 17th century Dutch and Flemish Old Masters, Mat Collishaw has created a series of photographs that reference mortality and the inevitability of death. For Last Meal on Death Row, Texas, Collishaw recreated meals as ordered by condemed prisoners on death row, with each one named after the person who requested it.
Working from his own photographs, James White produces monochrome paintings that explore everyday minutiae and hint at something that has occurred or that is occurring. The works have an eerie quality, alluding to a human presence without depicting any individuals.
This major exhibition is one of the largest ever presented at the Guildhall Art Gallery with works by contemporary artists presented alongside works from City’s own historic collection.
Nature Morte: Contemporary Artists Reinvigorate the Still Life, is at Guildhall Art Gallery, London until 2 April 2018
