Mat Collishaw’s film installation Sordid Earth returns to London’s Roundhouse as part of Curtain Call 2016. Created by Ron Arad, the circular 18 meter ‘curtain’ is made up of 5,600 silicon rods which create a 360˚canvas on which to show the work’s confluence of beauty and decay.
15 projectors present a panoramic vision of a tropical landscape on an all-encompassing scale, a backdrop against which the life cycle of exotic yet diseased blooms plays out as they gradually flower, wilt and die. The monumental scale heightens the impact of the film to give visitors an immersive experience through which Collishaw wants to convey a sense of the overpowering aspect of nature and the toxic nature of our interest in the grotesque.
