Eleven new works by Pietro Ruffo feature in his first solo exhibition in India, Terra Incognitawhich opens this month. Curated by John Xaviers the exhibition is named after the term used by early cartographers, who marked the unchartered territories as ‘incognita’ or unknown. Ruffo used colonial maps as canvas for drawings of ethnographic etchings made by imperialists and Orientalists. This work continues the artist’s interest the Age of Exploration, geopolitics and the interactions that shaped world history.
