Rachel Howard’s painting You Can Save Me is part of the anniversary exhibition Jerwood Collection: 25 Years. Acquired for the Jerwood Collection, the painting was created specifically for her 2015 solo show At Sea; a significant body of works which drew parallels between the sea, memories of childhood and ideas of being adrift.

‘When I went to visit the Jerwood Gallery in 2014 to discuss doing a show the following year, I saw a huge banner saying YOU CAN SAVE ME hanging from the burnt out Hastings Pier, at first I thought it was a cry for help from an individual then I realised it was a plea to raise funds for the restoration of the pier - it made me think of the suicide paintings I’d done almost a decade earlier.’ – Rachel Howard

Jerwood Collection: 25 Years is at the Jerwood Gallery until 15 April 2018
