Repetition is Truth – Via Dolorosa
Newport Street Gallery
Prudence Cuming Associates
On the occasion of her exhibition at Newport Street Gallery, artist Rachel Howard talks with John Wilson. Howard’s Repetition is Truth – Via Dolorosa series of paintings are on display at Newport Street Gallery for the first time in the UK. Commissioned by the Murderme collection and produced between 2005 and 2008, the series takes inspiration from the Stations of the Cross, 'Via Dolorosa' being the path taken by Jesus to Mount Calvary. Whilst referencing the long art-historical tradition of depicting the Stations, 'Repetition is Truth' also offers a broader commentary on the universality of human rights abuses.
John Wilson is a British journalist and broadcaster, one of the regular presenters of Front Row, the Radio 4 arts programme and has written about art and cultural issues for publications including The Observer and The Art Newspaper.
