Yinka Shonibare MBE has been elected a Royal Academician, alongside sculptors Tim Shaw and Neil Jeffries. He joins the governing body of the Royal Academy of Arts, London, as a representative of the category of sculpture. This governing body is comprised of 80 practising painters, sculptors, engravers, printmakers, draughtsmen and architects.
The Royal Academy of Arts was founding in 1769 by King George III and is an independent, privately funded institution led by artists and architects. It runs a diverse public programme, which promotes the experience and appreciation of the visual arts through exhibitions, education and debate. Elections are regularly held at the General Assembly, whereupon existing Royal Academicians decide on the election of new Members.
Yinka Shonibare MBE will be presenting new work in a solo exhibition at Blain|Southern Berlin in February 2014.
