Yinka Shonibare MBE has been honoured at the inaugural African Art Awards dinner at the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art in Washington, D.C.

The awards recognise the best in contemporary African art, celebrating the artistic achievements of individuals who are influencing the way the global community experiences the dynamic and diverse arts of Africa. Johnnetta Betsch Cole, Director of the Museum said, ‘Each awardee is exemplary in their field, continually working to make a difference on and off the continent.

Shonibare is also the recipient of the Visionaries! award which will be presented to him by the Museum of Arts and Design, NY at their annual gala dinner this evening. Reflecting the Museum’s mission to celebrate innovation and excellence across all creative disciplines, the award is given to outstanding individuals in the arts and design fields.

Later this month Wind Sculpture VII will be unveiled at the Smithsonian Institute, Washington D.C.
